'Showing Them the Respect They Are Due’ VFW’s National Military Services
VFW's National Military Services assists service members and their families in three fundamental ways.
By Jaime Netzer, VFW Magazine From funding troop support events to paying a struggling service family’s bills, VFW’s National Military Services (NMS) supports U.S. troops in a variety of meaningful ways.
Through programs like Operation Uplink, Unmet Needs and its Military Assistance Program (MAP), NMS strives to provide financial support and boost morale for those in uniform and their families.
“If our service members fall on hard times related to their military service, we can provide them monetary assistance,” says NMS Director Michael Penney. “We also have Operation Uplink, which keeps service members and their loved ones in touch with each other. And then with the MAP program, we try to demonstrate we care about their deployment sacrifices and hold welcome home events, assisting in any way we can to support social functions held by military units.”

VFW Chief Calls on Vietnam Veterans for Help in MIA/POW Mission
VFW Commander-in-Chief Glen Gardner is once again calling upon veterans of the Vietnam War to search their memory and files for any information that might be of value in determining the fate of Vietnam’s 300,000 MIAs and might be of assistance in the recovery of their remains.
Providing information of this nature to the Vietnamese government helps to generate good will among its people and further assists U.S. efforts in its investigative and recovery operations for America’s MIAs. Information is also needed for the Laotian and Cambodian governments to help account for their missing.
